MANILA – The Philippine Science High School (Pisay) launched a new platform on Wednesday that uses blockchain technology to manage student records. This is the same technology behind cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.
Called Pisay-DigiCert, the platform aims to modernize how student records are handled and shared. Blockchain technology allows for more secure, efficient, and tamper-proof records by storing information in connected blocks, making it harder to alter.
With Pisay-DigiCert, students and parents no longer need to physically go to the school to request documents. “It will make it easier for parents or students to request records without having to visit the school. Plus, it cuts down on the need for physical storage,” said Dr. Joel Bautista, the project leader.
The platform also ensures that schools and employers can quickly verify the authenticity of records. “If a university wants to check if a student’s record is valid, they can simply upload it to DigiCert for verification,” Bautista added.
Testing for the system is expected to begin later this year or in 2025. Pisay hopes that other schools and government agencies will follow their lead in using this type of technology to improve access to records, especially in emergencies.
Dr. Ruby Raterta from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) also emphasized that blockchain is not just for cryptocurrencies but can be used for various other applications, such as research and development.
